Running a label can be exhausting, but more than that there are many times where you ask yourself the question - “why am I doing this?” Then you work with a band like The Variable Stars and the world makes sense. They transport me back to a pre-internet time of music discovery and romance. Romance within music, yes, but also the romance of young love and friendship. The romance of late night conversations in deserted parking lots. I had the pleasure of seeing them many times in the early 2000s and they were always so humble, kind, cute and with the perfect amount of awkwardness. I desperately wanted to be around them.

I asked the band to give me their backstory, how they’d describe their sound and who they were listening to at the time, and what they’re listening to these days -

Astrid, a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist on the album answered with “lo-fi melodic eclectic cacophony?” while Amy, a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist on the album replied with “The band’s sound is relatively eccentric as everyone was writing songs, but for the most part I would say melodic British-influenced indie pop with our own unique California twist. Clean guitar tones, violin, faulty vintage keyboards, bass, drums, multi-part harmonies. Hell, sometimes there would be a harpsichord.” This “eclectic yet cohesive” sound as Ben Leyva calls it, comes through on a lot of the songs, especially A Path Through The Woods and The Understudy Quit The Play. Yet, the style fits comfortably in that Jangle Pop space and one can imagine this band of misfits on a bill with groups such as The June Brides or The Chesterfields fairly easily. Makes sense as some of the groups sited as influences are Belle and Sebastian, The Aislers Set, Camera Obscura, VU, The Corner Laughers, Yo La Tengo, Nick Drake, Magnetic Fields etc etc.
